NEWSLETTER                                                                          JULY 2020

Welcome

Hello everyone, and welcome to the July newsletter. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, July’s meeting has also had to be cancelled. All our monthly meetings and trips will be cancelled until the Government lift all restrictions. Hopefully, this will not take too long, and we send our best wishes to all members, family and friends to stay safe and well in this difficult time.

November Meeting

An early reminder for everyone.  The meeting in November has had the date changed because the stadium needs both of the suites for events on the day of our meeting.  The new date is Wednesday 17th November.  Please mark it on your calendars or diaries.

Turkey and Tinsel Break

Due to the cancellation of our spring break to Blackpool, the hotel have offered us an alternative date of Dec 18th to 21st for the same price of £99 thus becoming a Turkey & Tinsel weekend. Your payments have been transferred to this holiday.

Summer Holiday 2021

11th June 2021

We have now booked 21 people onto our 2021 holiday to Lakeside Holiday Village, Hampshire.  We are disappointed with the low numbers but recognise the possible anxieties re Covid – 19 could be holding people back from committing.  We would assure everyone that this venue is covered by free Covid – 19 insurance protection, and that Anthony’s Travel are taking all necessary precautions re travel arrangements.  If anyone wishes to see if there are any available spaces nearer to June 2021, if you contact Dianne Ryder on 01928 573801, she will be happy to make enquiries for you.

Any cheques for holidays to Barry, could you please ensure that the PAYEE is clearly marked as

Let’s Go Stroke Club.

Payments can also be made into the following bank account

Hand Sanitiser

PLEASE, PLEASE take a look at the advice below as I know many people like myself have or have had hand sanitiser in their cars and possibly on window sills at home.  I know I had some in my car until I saw this. Please take care and be safe.

iCAN Warning: Clarification on alcohol-based hand sanitiser – vehicle fires

It has subsequently come to light today, after our initial message, that the guidance document Halton Trading Standards was referencing has subsequently been withdrawn. To clarify the current advice on alcohol based hand sanitiser, they will not combust if left in a car – even on the hottest day. For hand sanitiser to cause a fire it would need to come into contact with a spark.

We advise residents to ensure they store their hand sanitisers in vehicles safely, which includes keeping bottles closed and out of direct sunlight. This will ensure the contents do not deteriorate.

If you or somebody you know has been caught out by a scam or fraud please contact one of our specialist officers, Linda or Sue on 0151 511 8785 or 0151 511 8775, who are already working with people in Halton who have lost thousands of pounds to scams.

If you need advice on anything else, please contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133

Take care and STAY SAFE everyone.

NEWSLETTER                                                                     JUNE 2020

Welcome

Hello everyone, and welcome to the June newsletter. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, June’s meeting has also had to be cancelled. All our monthly meetings and trips will be cancelled until the Government lift all restrictions. Hopefully, this will not take too long, and we send our best wishes to all members, family and friends to stay safe and well at this difficult time.

An early reminder for everyone.  The meeting in November has had the date changed because the stadium needs both suites for events on the day of our meeting.  The new date is Wednesday 17th November.  Please mark it on your calendars or diaries.

Summer Holiday

Normally around this time of year members are looking forward to our annual week away to Devon, but unfortunately the holiday to Croyde Bay has been cancelled. The full deposit has been refunded so members have the option of a full refund of payments made or to transfer the credit over towards the 2021 holiday which is discussed below in the newsletter.

Summer Holiday 2021

11 June 2021

As you will see from the attached leaflet, included with this newsletter, we have managed to secure a 7-day holiday for club members at Lakeside Holiday Village on Hayling Island, Hampshire for next year.  The facilities appear to be excellent and there are a lot of on-site activities to take part in if you are interested.  We will also be able to explore a different area of the country and have access to a beach without too much difficulty.  The cost is £429 but to secure your place on the holiday you will need to pay a £30 non-refundable deposit before 2nd July 2020.  Warner Leisure are also able provide group holiday insurance for £13 per person, which is extremely reasonable.  If you wish to access this cover, a decision must be made before we pay the deposit.                       Payments for the deposit and insurance, if needed, can be paid into the club’s bank account by online banking using the following details:

Sort Code: 60-19-24

Account No: 43542581

One more potential scam going around:

iCAN WARNING

TV’s sold from the back of vans!

Halton Trading Standards wants to make consumers aware that TV’s are being sold from the back of vans at various sites across Cheshire. There is a possibility the traders may turn up within the Borough. We would advise consumers to be wary of purchasing these TV’s, as there is no way of knowing if they are working, safe and/or stolen goods. Newsletter – May 2020

NEWSLETTER                                                                  May 2020

Welcome

Hello everyone, and welcome to the May newsletter. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus pandemic May’s meeting has also had to be cancelled. All our monthly meetings and trips will be cancelled until the Government lift all restrictions. Hopefully, this will not take too long and we send our best wishes to all members, family and friends to stay safe and well in this difficult time.

June Meeting

We wouldn’t normally have a meeting in June, because most of us are away on the group holiday, but IF the lockdown is over we will have an evening meeting on Wednesday 10th June.  Lets hope we can all meet up again next month.

November Meeting

An early reminder for everyone.  The meeting in November has had the date changed because the stadium need both of the suites for an event on the day of our meeting.  The new date is Wednesday 17th November.  Please mark it on your calendars or diaries.

Turkey and Tinsel Break

Once again due to the Coronavirus our spring break to Blackpool has also had to be cancelled. The Hotel have offered us an alternative date of Dec 18th to 21st for the same price of £99 thus becoming a Turkey & Tinsel weekend.

Summer Holiday

The holiday to Croyde Bay has been cancelled, regretfully. The lockdown won’t be over by the time we travel, and the general consensus is that most people don’t want to sit in a group on the coach for 6 hours, and then mix with other guests in the hotel.  Considering the age of our members and their increased vulnerability has left us with no other option.  We are looking for more suitable venues for next years holiday.  Only £20 per person has been paid as a deposit to the hotel, which should be returned to us.

 Afternoon Club

Once again the afternoon club have been cancelled until further notice.

Newsletter – April 2020

NEWSLETTER                                                                   APRIL 2020

Welcome

Hello everyone, and welcome to the April newsletter. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus pandemic April’s meeting has had to be cancelled. All our monthly meetings and trips will be cancelled until the Government lift all restrictions. Hopefully, this will not take too long and we send our best wishes to all members, family and friends to stay safe and well at this difficult time.

AGM

Many thanks to all our members who attended and participated in our AGM. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to attract anyone to fill the 2 vacant positions on the Committee, but hopefully someone’s conscience will prick them, and they will realise that we rely on volunteers to keep the club functioning, and that maybe they would like to give something back to the club. We are fortunate that our treasurer Barry Heap and Secretary Dianne Ryder have been re-elected onto the committee with no opposition. I hope you all enjoyed the delicious buffet afterwards.

Spring Break

Once again due to the Coronavirus our spring break to Blackpool has also had to be cancelled. The Hotel have offered us an alternative date of Dec 18th to 21st for the same price of £99 thus becoming a Turkey & Tinsel weekend.

Summer Holiday

At this point in time we do not know if our Summer holiday to Croyde Bay will be going ahead. A decision will be made in May and all members who are booked on the holiday will be notified. Dianne Ryder is looking for an alternative venue for the holiday in 2021.

Afternoon Club

Once again the afternoon club has been cancelled until further notice.

Newsletter – March 2020

NEWSLETTER                                                                  MARCH 2020

Welcome

Hello everyone, welcome, and thanks for attending our AGM. I know it’s not very exciting, but it is necessary for us to comply with the Charities Commission rules, so thanks for bearing with us. Just a reminder that if you haven’t renewed your membership for this year yet, you need to do it now, in order to have a vote, and enjoy our delicious buffet.

AGM

Disappointingly, we received no nominations for committee members this year. Fortunately, we have a good team already in place, but we really do need some fresh impetus from new members. Only a few hours a month is all we are asking for, which shouldn’t be too much to ask from members who are mostly retired. We can co-opt members onto the committee at any time, not just at the AGM, so if anyone would like to reconsider, and put something back into the club, then please have a word with any committee member, join us, and see what you’re missing.

Spring Break

On Friday 24th April, 37 of us are off to Blackpool for a spring break holiday. We were fortunate to take advantage of a massive price reduction from £195 down to £99. Luggage tags will be distributed next month. The coach leaves the Red Admiral at 09.15, and the Halton Stadium at 09.30. PLEASE, PLEASE, remember to bring your medications.

Summer Holiday

Just a reminder that the holiday must be paid in full by the May meeting. As always, to help spread the cost, we are accepting periodic payments to avoid paying it all in one go. Please remember to bring your payment cards with you though, so you have a record of what you have paid.

Day Trip

Our first trip of the year is to Boundary Mill, on Friday 20th March. The coach leaves the Red Admiral at 09.30 and the Stadium at 09.45, the cost being £10 a head. We hope to return for 6pm. Please give your names to Dianne. If we have enough interest (around 25), we will collect the money later tonight.

Also, the trip to Llandudno on 24th April, has had to be brought forward a week to the 17th April, as it now clashes with the spring break holiday. Remember to adjust your diaries.

Afternoon Club

Last month we had an Easter bonnet decorating competition, judged by Mandy the owner of Macy’s café. To celebrate the 4th birthday of the afternoon club, we are providing a free cold buffet. Please give us a £5 deposit which will be reimbursed when you arrive. Free tea and coffee too.

Mayors Charity

This Friday the 13th, the Mayor is hosting an Irish night here at the stadium. Alan Gill, the fabulous entertainer, who played for us last month is the star of the show, plus there is a hotpot supper and dessert. Tickets are discounted at £10 a head, so please form an orderly queue to give me your names.

On Saturday 4th April, it’s Grand National Day, and here at the stadium you are invited to watch all the races televised with live betting. The bar is open, and afternoon tea will be served. Dress up as if you were off to the races and participate in this spectacle in comfort and out of the rain. Tickets are £20, and a great afternoon is guaranteed, but we can’t promise you will back a winner! The fun starts at 1pm!

We have been invited to attend Morrisons, Widnes on Sunday 29th March to carry out a bag pack to raise funds for the Mayors Charity. Obviously, we will eventually receive half of what we raise, as we are one of her nominated charities. The action starts at 11am and ends at 3pm, and you can put your name down for one or more one hour slots. Please come and help us if you are available.

Newsletter – February 2020

NEWSLETTER                                                          FEBRUARY 2020

Welcome

Hello everyone and welcome to our February meeting, and it’s Valentines night (Well nearly). Tonight, we have a great singer who has become a club favourite, Alan Gill who we welcome back to the club. So, sit back and enjoy his vocal and musical talents.

Mayors Charity

While I’m talking about Alan Gill, he will be coming back here to the stadium next month on the 13th, to entertain the Mayors charity at our St Patricks day dinner. So, if would like to hear him again singing his Irish songs, together with a 3-course dinner and disco, then give me £10 each and you’re in.

Spring Break

With the demise of The Esplanade Hotel in Llandudno, we are searching around for a suitable replacement. We have found only one to date, which is the Bond Hotel in Blackpool. It is fully set up as a hotel for disabled guests and looks good in the brochure. It is being redecorated presently and is shut until April. So, if you could give us an idea if it is worth us pursuing or not, then we would have an idea on the numbers interested. Again, we are looking at a Friday to Monday booking.

Summer Holiday

This week I must pay our £500 non-returnable deposit to the Croyde Bay Hotel. Currently we only have 19 members committing to the holiday, which we need to increase to make it viable. The dates for your diary are Saturday 13th to 20th June at £400 per person. There are no sea view rooms here.

Memberships

Membership renewals are due now. The cost is just £20 for the whole year, which represents excellent value for money. Please see me with your subscriptions.

 AGM

On the subject of memberships, can I remind everyone that it is the AGM next month, so if you want to attend, and enjoy our delicious buffet, you need to be a fully paid up member. We will be taking a register on the night, so if you haven’t renewed, you won’t be allowed to take part. This year, as you can see on the notice, we have TWO vacancies, one, due to the retirement of Bryan Cartwright last year, after many years of sterling service to the club, plus the vacancy open since two years ago which is still vacant. If you see yourself as the newest recruit, then please make sure that you can commit to attending ALL the committee and club meetings before you apply. We would also like you to support the clubs activities, be they the trips, charity fundraising nights and any external promotional events we commit to. The more you contribute, the more satisfying it becomes.

If you think that you are the person we are looking for, and you have the ideas, energy and a willingness to get involved, get your application in to Dianne before the closing date of 28th February. If you need more information, then have a chat with any committee member. Come and join us and make a difference.

Love is in the air!

Just to let you know that Mike Duncan is getting married on Valentines Day to Beranice Manley, you pair of hopeless romantics! The club has given them a gift on your behalf, and I’m sure you will all join me in wishing them both a great day, and every happiness for the future.

Afternoon Club

The indoor games on offer last month brought some fun to an otherwise cold, wet afternoon. Next week we are having a craft session, all free, where you will be able to demonstrate your artistic flair and imagination. Don’t forget the free drinks and maybe a slice of cake either!

Newsletter – January 2020

NEWSLETTER                                                            JANUARY 2020

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We wish all our members a happy and healthy New Year. The Christmas Party was a great success and well attended. Club favourite, singer Dave Osborne was fantastic, the carvery meal was hot and tasty, and we hope you all had a good night. The first prize in the raffle of £150 was won by Molly Daly.

Hampers

Thanks to your generosity, we managed to give Age UK seven hampers for them to give to the less fortunate in our community. We made up another 2 booze and chocolate hampers to offer as raffle prizes at Christmas.

Holiday Deposits

The members who were due to travel with us to Llandudno for the Turkey and Tinsel holiday, were disappointed to hear of the hotel’s liquidation. Our money we had paid to them seemed lost, but the committee made the decision to refund everyone. Recently I have had the great news that one of the banks, owed more than £6 million by the hotel has agreed to refund all the private creditors which includes us. I’ll let you know when we receive that refund.

Memberships

Renewals are due now, and as previously mentioned, the cost is still £20, which is fantastic value for money, taking into consideration what we provide.

Summer Holiday

This year we plan to return to the Croyde Bay Hotel, which unsurprisingly is in Croyde Bay, North Devon. The dates this year are Saturday 13th to Saturday 20th June, and the cost is £400 per person. The limited number of rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis, so be quick. We have already started a reserve list, so unfortunately, we cannot guarantee everybody a place, but I hope we can pick up some extra rooms nearer to the holiday. A £100 per person non-returnable deposit is required. We must know tonight if you want to secure a place, so I can send the deposit to the hotel asap.

croydeportrait

Afternoon Club

The free buffet at The Grangeway before Christmas was delicious, and we had 24 participants. We could do with more members attending, so if you fancy it, come along next Wednesday between 2pm and 4pm.

Spring Break

Obviously due to the demise of the Esplanade Hotel in Llandudno, we are having to look around for a suitable venue for a weekend break. If we find anywhere in the next few weeks’ we’ll let you know.

Mayors Charity

There is a Jazz night at the Wids Rugby club, Heath Road, Widnes on Saturday 25th January organised by the Widnes Rotary Club. It starts at 8pm and includes a hotpot supper. Please see Teresa if it’s your “Thing”, and you want tickets which are £20 each. Proceeds will go to the Mayors Charity.

Tonight

Tonight is Bingo night with cash prizes on offer. We will have 6 games, each with a prize for a line and a full house.

Molly Daly

This lady turns 90 on the 23rd of January, so I’m sure you will all join us in wishing Molly a very happy birthday. We have a beautiful flower arrangement to present to her tonight.

Christmas Party

Tickets for our Christmas party are on sale tonight, priced at £10.00 a head. Admission will be by ticket only. As always, it will be a great night, with good food and entertainment, in the company of friends. We urge as many people as possible to support the party, by bringing friends and family along. It is taking place on Wednesday 11th of December. Meeting at 7.30pm for an 8pm start, we are hoping to finish at 11pm.

Hampers

Once again, we will be accepting food and drink items for our Christmas hampers tonight. These will be gifted to less fortunate members of our community, to make a difference to their Christmas. If you wish to contribute, but haven’t brought your donation tonight, ring any committee member asap, and they will arrange collection.

Afternoon Club

I believe the memory boxes which Halton Libraries brought in last month was a lot of fun, and thought provoking, and worth inviting back in the future. Next week, Sandra and Teresa have bought some craft materials, and you will have a chance to show off your artistic skills. As usual, free tea and cake/biscuits are on offer. Next months’ meeting is a free Christmas buffet at the Grangeway Community Centre. To secure your place we ask for £5 a head which will be refunded when you arrive. Please give your name and money to Dianne, so we can order sufficient food from the caterers

Mayors Charity

The Mayor is holding a Christmas Bingo night here at the stadium on Wednesday 27th November at 7.30pm. Admission is 50p, and from experience, it is very well supported. There are some great prizes to be won and children are welcome to attend. The next fundraising event is on Saturday 7th December, here at the stadium, and is a Christmas Party night. There is a 3-course meal on offer, for the princely sum of £10. Tickets are selling out fast, so if you want to join us, give me your name tonight, as the Mayor needs to know the numbers by Friday.

Panto

The HEARTS Theatre group have donated 10 tickets for their panto “Mother Goose”, which is to be performed at Upton Community Centre on Wednesday 4th December. We would like them to go mainly to children with an accompanying adult. Put your name on a slip and we will have a draw later for them.

Panto 2

The Brindley have donated 3 tickets to the club via the Mayors Charity. These retail at £24 for an adult and £18 for children. Tonight we are having an auction for them with a reserve of £20 for the 3. The panto is Snow White, and the tickets are for Saturday 14th December. Get your purses out ladies.
